Why will NASA launch a spacecraft to the metallic asteroid Psyche in October?

The Psyche mission, which was originally scheduled to launch on October 12 from Florida's Kennedy Space Center toward the metallic asteroid of the same name, has been rescheduled by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

In order to give itself more time to finish verifying the settings that are required to accurately and sufficiently regulate the cold nitrogen gas thrusters of the Psyche mission, NASA took this decision.

Positioning the Psyche satellite Among many other purposes, these thrusters help the vehicle to be oriented in support of energy, scientific, thermal, and other needs, such the spacecraft's correct orientation and impulse control.

Recent updates to the forecasts of increased temperatures for these rockets prompted changes to the settings. NASA stated in a statement that "operating the thrusters within temperature limits is essential to ensure the long-term health of the units."

What are the tasks involved in verification? Rerunning simulations and identifying the necessary modifications to flight parameters and procedures are part of the verification process. Psyche's 2022 launch date was pushed back because to issues with the navigation software.

The spacecraft will launch from Space X on a Falcon Heavy rocket. Targeting the Sun in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is the interesting metal-rich asteroid named Psyche.
